Verizon MiFi versus Satellite Internet in Rural Areas

Having a cabin in the rural area of the Catskills in NY,  I was forced to get satellite internet, since there was no availability of DSL or Cable internet. However with the huge coverage of Verizon’s 3G network I have another option for a broadband connection.

Below is a summary of the two connections I have available to me when I did my test.  I am glad I was able to test this. This test has proven to me that even 3G data connection (or 4G and LTE in the future) will be my preferred internet connection over any satellite internet service that is available.

You uploaded at: 85 kB/s
You are running: 12 times faster than 56K and can upload 1 megabyte in 12.05 second(s)

Conclusion

At the download speed you can see a 33% increase in speed with the Verizon MiFi over the Satellite internet service. However the big difference in the upload speed, over a 300% increase with the Verizon MiFi over the Satellite internet service. If you are a VPN user,  like I am, you will find out that working over VPN with Satellite Internet service will slow you down dramatically to aggravation of not able to browse on your external server. However with the MiFi with Verizon I had no issues browsing the folders on the VPN server and downloading my spreadsheets. Of course when a storm rolls over the mountain you will be less likely to lose internet service due to the weather blocking the good signal to your satellite.

Besides saving money with the Verizon MiFi data/internet service, you will have a much faster and reliable internet connection compared to any Satellite Internet service out there. Do you live in a rural area and want fast reliable internet and you have no access to cable or DSL, check out the Verizon Map and see if you have 3G available in you neck of the woods. I even think Verizon can run a separate campaign for the rural area’s and grab some of these satellite customers.

Can we please go back to the moon?

The Real Story Of Apollo 17… And Why We Never Went Back To The Moon

The Real Story Of Apollo 17... And Why We Never Went Back To The MoonEXPAND

On December 11, 1972, Apollo 17 touched down on the Moon. This was not only our final Moon landing, but the last time we left Low Earth Orbit. With the successful launch of the Orion capsule, NASA is finally poised to go further again. So it’s important to remember how we got to the Moon — and why we stopped going.

Crewed by Commander Eugene A. Cernan, Command Module Pilot Ronald E. Evans and Lunar Module Pilot Harrison P. Schmitt, the Apollo 17 mission was the first to include a scientist. The primary scientific objectives included "geological surveying and sampling of materials and surface features in a preselected area of the Taurus-Littrow region; deploying and activating surface experiments; and conducting in-flight experiments and photographic tasks during lunar orbit and trans earth coast."

The Real Story Of Apollo 17... And Why We Never Went Back To The MoonEXPAND12345

Harrison ‘Jack’ Schmitt had earned his PhD in Geology from Harvard University in 1964, and had worked for the United States Geological Survey and at Harvard University before going through Astronaut training in 1965. Apollo 17 was his first mission into space, and would be the first astronaut-scientist to step on the surface of the Moon. Accompanying him was Eugene ‘Gene’ Cernan, a veteran astronaut who had first flown into space with the Gemini IX-A mission in 1966 and later served as the Lunar Module Pilot for the Apollo 10 mission in May of 1969, where he came within 90 miles of the Lunar surface.

04 14 21 43: Schmitt: Stand by. 25 feet, down at 2. Fuel’s good. 20 feet. Going down at 2. 10 feet. 10 feet –

04 14 21 58: Schmitt: CONTACT.

04 14 22 03: Schmitt: *** op, push. Engine stop; ENGINE ARM; PROCEED; COMMAND override, OFF; MODE CONTROL, ATT HOLD; PGNS, AUTO.

Schmitt landed the Challenger Lunar Module in the Taurus-Littrow lunar valley, just to the southeast of Mare Serenitatis, a region of geological significance on the Moon. The mission’s planners hoped that the region would provide a wealth of information about the history of the Moon’s surface. Upon landing, the pair began their own observations of the lunar surface:

04 14 37 05: Cernan: "You know, I noticed there’s even a lot of difference in earthshine and – and in the double umbra. You get in earthshine on the thing, and it’s – it’s hard to see the stars even if you don’t have the Earth in there."

04 14 23 28: Cernan: "Oh, man. Look at that rock out there."

Schmitt: "Absolutely incredible. Absolutely incredible."

After several hours of preparation, Cernan stepped onto the Lunar surface:

04 18 31 0: "I’m on the footpad. And, Houston, as I step off at the surface at Taurus-Littrow, I’d like to dedicate the first step of Apollo 17 to all those who made it possible. Jack, I’m out here. Oh, my golly. Unbelievable. Unbelievable, but is it bright in the Sun. Okay. We landed in a very shallow depression. That’s why we’ve got a slight pitch-up angle. Very shallow, dinner-plate-like."

The two astronauts unloaded a lunar rover, and began to deploy scientific instruments around their landing site: an experiments package and explosives (to complete seismic experiments begun with other Apollo missions in other locations on the Moon). Their first exclusion in the rover yielded numerous samples of lunar rock. Over the next couple of days, the astronauts completed two additional Moon walks, where they continued to drive across the lunar surface and collect samples.

The Real Story Of Apollo 17... And Why We Never Went Back To The MoonEXPAND6

Schmitt later described the landing site to NASA Oral historian Carol Butler: "It was the most highly varied site of any of the Apollo sites. It was specifically picked to be that. We had three-dimensions to look at with the mountains, to sample. You had the Mare basalts in the floor and the highlands in the mountain walls. We also had this apparent young volcanic material that had been seen on the photographs and wasn’t immediate obvious, but ultimately we found in the form of the orange soil at Shorty crater."

Why we went to space

The scientific endeavors of Apollo 17 were the culmination of a massive program that had begun in 1963 following the successes of the Mercury Program. In the aftermath of the Second World War, the United States and Soviet Union became embroiled in a competitive arms race that saw significant military gains on both sides, eventually culminating in the development of rockets capable of striking enemy territory across the world. The next step for arms superiority jumped from the atmosphere to Low Earth Orbit to the Moon, the ultimate high ground. As this happened, each country capitalized on the advances in rocket technology to experiment with human spaceflight missions. The Soviet Union succeeded in putting Yuri Gagarin into space in 1961, just a couple of years after launching the first satellite into orbit.

Closely followed by the United States, space became an incredibly public demonstration of military and technological might. The development of space travel didn’t occur in a political vacuum: the drive for the United States to develop rockets and vehicles which could travel higher and faster than their Soviet counterparts happened alongside increasing US/USSR tensions, especially as geopolitical crises such the Cuban Missile Crisis and the US deployment of missiles to Turkey demonstrated how ready each country was to annihilating the other.

As the space program took off, it was supported by other research and scientific efforts from the broader military industrial complex which President Dwight Eisenhower had worried about just a handful of years earlier. (Eisenhower had not been a major supporter of the development of space travel which began under his watch, and had attempted to downplay the significance of Sputnik.) The red hot environment of the Cold War allowed for significant political capital and governmental spending which supported a first-strike infrastructure, and in part, trickled over to the scientific and aeronautical fields, which maintained a peaceful and optimistic message.

By 1966, the space race peaked: NASA received its highest budget ever, at just under 4.5% of the total US federal budget, at $5.933 billion dollars (around $43 billion today.) The United States had made clear gains in space by this point: Project Gemini had completed its final mission, and with efforts towards the next phase under Apollo were well under way. By this point, the social and political infrastructure and support for space had begun to wane, and would ultimately fall away after Apollo 11 successfully landed on the Moon’s surface in July of 1969. After this point, NASA continued with planned missions, and eventually landed five additional Apollo missions on the Moon. (Another, Apollo 13, was unable to land after mechanical problems).

Changing priorities

Just a year after Apollo 11 landed, NASA began to reprioritize: plans for a space station were revived, and in 1970, they announced that Apollo 20 would be cancelled in favor of the creation of a new venture: Skylab. On September 2nd, 1970, the agency announced the final three Apollo missions: Apollo 15, 16 and 17. The agency was forced to contend with political pressure as well: In 1971, the White House intended to completely cancel the Apollo program after Apollo 15, but ultimately, the two remaining Apollo missions were kept in place. Harrison Schmitt, who had been training for Apollo 18, was bumped up to Apollo 17 after NASA faced pressure from scientists to send one of their own to the Moon.

On December 14th, 1972, Cernan became the last human to step on the Moon’s surface:

07 00 00 47: "Bob, this is Gene, and I’m on the surface and as I take man’s last steps from the surface, back home, for some time to come, but we believe not too long into the future. I’d like to Just list what I believe history will record that America’s challenge of today has forged man’s destiny of tomorrow. And, as we leave the Moon at Taurus Littrow, we leave as we come and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind. Godspeed the crew of Apollo 17."

In the forty-two years since those words were spoken, nobody has stepped on the Moon. The levels of federal spending which NASA had received before 1966 had become untenable to a public which had become financially wary, particularly as they experienced a major oil crisis in 1973, which shifted the nation’s priorities. Spending in space was something that could be done, but with far more fiscal constraints than ever before, limiting NASA to research and scientific missions in the coming years. Such programs included the development of the Skylab program in 1973, and the Space Shuttle program, as well as a number of robotic probes and satellites.

The Real Story Of Apollo 17... And Why We Never Went Back To The MoonEXPAND

This shift in priorities deeply impacted the willpower of policymakers to implement new exploratory missions to the Moon and beyond. Optimistic dreams of reaching Mars had long since perished, and as NASA focused on the Space Shuttle, the physical infrastructure which supported lunar missions vanished: No longer were Saturn V rockets manufactured, and unused rockets were turned into museum displays. The entire technical and manufacturing apparatus, which has supported both military and civilian operations, had likewise begun to wind down. The Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) and its successors began to freeze the numbers of missiles which could be deployed by both the United States and Soviet Union in 1972, and each country largely began to step down their operations. The urgency which fueled the Cold War arms race had begun to cool, and along with it, the support for much of the efforts required to bring people into space and to the Moon.

Since that time, US Presidents have spoken of their desire to return to the Moon, but often in terms of decades, rather than in single digits. It’s easy to see why: up until recently, US spaceflight operations were focused entirely on Low Earth Orbit activities, as well as admirable cooperative international programs such as the International Space Station, and major scientific instruments such as Mars Pathfinder, Opportunity/Spirit and Curiosity. Other major concerns have redirected US attentions from spaceflight: the United States’ War on Terror, which is expected to cost US taxpayers over $5 trillion dollars in the long run.

The Real Story Of Apollo 17... And Why We Never Went Back To The MoonEXPAND

The launch of Orion atop a Delta IV Heavy rocket was exciting to watch, as well as newer players in the space launch field, SpaceX and Orbital Sciences Corporation, which suggesting that a new generation of infrastructure is being constructed. The reasons for visiting the Moon and potentially, other planets and bodies in our solar system, are numerous: they could be the greatest scientific endeavors of our existence, allowing us to further understand the creation of our planet and solar system and the greater world around us. More importantly though, such missions contribute to the character of the nation, demonstrating the importance of science and technology to our civilization, which will ultimately help us process and address the issues of greatest concern: the health of our planet. Hopefully, Cernan’s words and hope that our absence from the Moon will be short-lived, and that we will once again explore new worlds in our lifetimes.

Judicial Watch: Homeland Security Documents Reveal DHS Abandoned Required Illegal Alien Background Checks to Meet Flood of Amnesty Requests Following Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Directive
Documents Reveal That ‘Dreamers’ Order Opened Door to Relatives of Illegal Immigrants, "Inundating" Border Towns With Petitions for Admission
WASHINGTON, DC, Jun 11, 2013 (Marketwired via COMTEX) — Judicial Watch announced today that documents obtained recently through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request show that the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) abandoned required background checks late last year, adopting, instead, costly "lean and lite" procedures in effort to keep up with the flood of amnesty applications spurred by President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) directive, which grants illegal aliens a two-year deferment from deportation.
Acting on a tip from a whistleblower at a federal law enforcement agency, Judicial Watch filed a FOIA request with DHS, for "all communications, memoranda, emails, policy guidance, directives, initiatives, and any other correspondence respecting the scope and extent of background checks to be performed (or not) on aliens applying to the Obama administration’s DACA program." The FOIA was filed on October 26, 2012. The Immigration and National Security Act (INA) mandates a "coordinated, uniform, and efficient," system of background checks. Instead, the FOIA documents reveal a costly, haphazard process, with only cursory review for the backgrounds of illegal aliens seeking "deferred status."
Document highlights include:
— In a series of agency memos beginning in September 14, 2012, field offices were told to expect the National Benefits Center (which collects all DACA applications) to conduct only "lean & lite" background checks on illegal alien applicants, and that, henceforth, "NBC will not perform full TECS checks or any evidence review on these cases before we ship to the field." An October 14 memo reiterated that under the new "lean and lite" policy, "Hits will be sent to the field without resolution." On October 25, the St. Paul Field Director conceded to staffers that the new "lean & lite" procedures were for an indefinite period of time, saying, "I just can’t tell you when things will revert back to the way they used to be."
— An email chain from September 5 and through November 14 indicates managerial pressure not to turn any illegal alien applicant away for lack of ID, including the explicit directive in an October 3 memo, "Biometric processing should not be refused solely because an applicant does not present an acceptable ID." In an October 1 memo further restricting independent action by agency personnel, they were instructed, "Every two weeks field offices will report the number of DACA requestors who appear for biometrics collection at an ASC during the previous two week period, but were turned away without fingerprints or photographs being taken. Field offices will also need to provide the reason why the DACA requestor was turned away by the ASC ISO." — The documents suggest added taxpayer costs for the new deportation deferral program. On June 28, 2012, all Regional Service Managers were informed that they were to "come up with the number of guards that would be required and a dollar amount" in order to meet the new DACA processing requirements. On July 31, 2012, the agency announced, "In support of the President’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) initiative, USCIS is procuring 40 additional biometrics workstations."
— On November 9, 2012, just three days after Obama was reelected, in an "!!! IMPORTANT DACA MESSAGE!!! The agency was directed to: "Please put all DACA work on hold until further notice." There are no later-dated documents in the production to indicate how or when USCIS resumed DACA background checks or application processing. The documents also reveal that, contrary to DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano’s claim that DACA applied only to minors who came to this country illegally "through no fault of their own," the directive actually created a new avenue of chain migration, whereby immediate relatives of DACA requesters could be approved for amnesty. As a result, according to a June 18, 2012, agency memo from District 15 Director, David Douglas, "some of the districts closer to the U.S./Mexico border have been inundated."
"The Obama administration seems to be throwing public safety and national security out the door in implementing its illicit and unilateral amnesty program for illegal aliens. The costs and security lapses of this program show that this administration can’t be trusted to implement any of the new security measures in the amnesty bill in the Senate," stated Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton. "These documents show a crisis in law enforcement and national security caused by President Obama’s unilateral decision to grant amnesty to hundreds of thousands illegal aliens."

IRS EXEMPTS TERROR FRONT GROUP OVER TEA PARTY

Reinstated despite years of delinquent filings
Published: 1 day ago
At the same time the Internal Revenue Service delayed or denied requests for tax-exempt status from hundreds of conservative non-profit groups, it was quietly restoring the tax-exempt status of an Islamist front group accused of collaborating with terrorists.
Last year, the politicized agency reinstated the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations’ tax-exempt status despite years of delinquent tax filings. CAIR officials had met with officials inside the White House before the decision was made.
Though Democrat-connected CAIR did not officially endorse Obama, many of its staffers helped turn out the Muslim vote for his re-election. CAIR boasted that its own polling showed more than 85 percent of Muslim-Americans voted for Obama.

In 2011, the IRS stripped the group’s national office of its nonprofit status for failure to file annual tax reports as required by federal law.
The moved followed requests by then-Rep. Sue Myrick, R-N.C., and other congressional leaders asking the IRS to investigate after the 2009 bestseller “Muslim Mafia” called attention to CAIR’s missing IRS filings and foreign donations.

Fight back against CAIR’s attack on First Amendment by making a contribution to WND’s “Legal Defense Fund.” Donations of $25 or more entitle you to free copy of “Muslim Mafia” – the book so devastating to CAIR the group is trying to ban it.
During the years CAIR failed to disclose its donors to the government, it solicited funds from Libya, Sudan and other terror-sponsoring foreign governments, according to “Muslim Mafia.” CAIR is not registered as a foreign agent.

CAIR repeatedly failed to file its annual disclosure report, IRS Form 990. CAIR blames a clerical error for the delinquency and claims to have completed the forms. However, several news organizations, including Politico.com and Gannett Co., have asked CAIR for the 2007-2010 documents, and CAIR has not been able to produce them.

“Given CAIR’s status as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation terror-financing case, this failure to comply with federal disclosure laws is all the more troubling,” U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf, the co-chairman of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, wrote the IRS in a separate request for investigation in 2011.

CAIR’s terrorist ties run deep. The Justice Department lists it among U.S. front groups for Hamas, a Palestinian terrorist organization. And several CAIR officials have been convicted or deported on terrorism-related charges.
The FBI says that until suspicious ties between the leadership of CAIR and that of Hamas are resolved, it will no longer work with CAIR as a partner in counter-terrorism efforts.

Despite these red flags, the IRS in June 2012 sent CAIR-Foundation Inc. a letter stating the controversial nonprofit had regained its tax-exempt
status as a 501(c)3. At the same time, the IRS demanded tea party and other patriot groups turn over donor rolls, membership lists and contacts with political figures, among other things, before the agency would consider granting tax-exempt status to them.

CAIR Foundation, which is listed at the same 453 New Jersey Ave. address as CAIR’s national headquarters in Washington, told the Washington Post that “all the paperwork issues have been resolved” concerning the organization.
However, WND has obtained CAIR-Foundation Inc.’s latest filing, and even this tax document is incomplete. It is a partial return for the calendar year 2011, covering only the period from Aug. 9, 2011, to Dec. 31, 2011. The final page of the return, in fact, requests an extension from the IRS.

“Additional time is required to obtain information necessary in filing a complete and accurate return,” states CAIR’s accountant Joey Musmar.

The filing says the organization solicited $3,964,990 in gifts, grants and other contributions that “were not tax deductible.” An annual fundraiser raised a net $106,879.
At the beginning of 2011, CAIR’s liabilities exceeded its assets by $940,279.
It also owed “CAIR Inc.” $722,261 for “charity consulting.” This amount is listed as a “loan.” CAIR Inc. is listed as a “C Corp.”
CAIR insists its tax returns for 2007-2010 exist. Yet it still won’t produce them, despite repeated requests. According to the IRS, nonprofits must make their tax returns available to the public upon request.
CAIR lists Todd Gallinger, director of chapter development, as its contact for such matters, at (202) 488-8787 and tgallinger@cair.com.
It’s not clear what, if anything, the IRS investigated concerning CAIR’s filings. The agency did not respond to requests for comment.

Giant shark caught off Southland coast stuns sport fishing world

Conservationists are upset that a 1,323.5-pound mako shark was taken from the waters off Huntington Beach as part of a reality TV show taping. But scientists see an opportunity to study species behavior.

June 4, 2013, 7:57 p.m.

"Yeehaw!" the sport fishermen yelled when they saw the fins slice the gray channel water off Huntington Beach.

The chum of chopped mackerel and sardines had worked. The fight was on — and so were the cameras.

The six men had motored out in the June gloom Monday morning for more than a day of fun. They were filming a reality show called "The Professionals" for the Outdoor Channel.

The way they tell it, they hooked a giant mako and Jason Johnston, from Mesquite, Texas, got in the pole harness to reel it in. He grunted and slipped and slid for 2 1/2 hours as the shark ran the line out almost a mile, thrashing and jumping 20 feet in the air. They finally pulled it to the side of the boat, the Breakaway, and tied it up with a steel cable.

By the time they hauled it to Huntington Harbor and had it weighed at a processing plant in Gardena, they realized they appeared to have broken a record for the largest mako to be caught by line, 1,323.5 pounds.

The men posed next to the cobalt blue fish and opened its jaws, revealing its dagger-sharp rows of teeth to the cameras. They breathlessly recounted how, if anything went wrong, they would have ended up as "lunch" or "at the bottom of the sea."

Johnston, 40, described it to one television reporter as "a gigantic nightmare looking to reap horrible terror on anything it comes across."

One of Earth’s most ancient and mythologized creatures still manages to stir humans’ imaginations, scratching that atavistic urge to bring in a monster. But even before it became clear that the catch was for a reality show, plenty of people wondered why they really had to kill such a magnificent animal.

Wouldn’t just pulling it close and photographing it have been enough?

Ben Ahadpour, who owns the marina the fisherman left from, said the captain of the boat, Matt Potter, 33, of Huntington Beach, knew the dock rules prohibited bringing in sharks.

"He shouldn’t have done that," Ahadpour said. "They could have done a catch and release. They can bring it up close, take a picture and let the shark go. But I guess they’re so excited about their catch and getting his two minutes of fame."

David McGuire, the director of Shark Stewards, a Bay Area nonprofit that advocates for the protection of sharks, said he was shocked.

"It’s really something you see more in Florida than in California, where we have more of a conservation ethic," he said. "People should be viewing these sharks as wonderful animals that are important to the ocean and admiring how beautiful they are."

He lamented that so many shows about sharks continue to evoke Jaws-like terror rather than science. "These kind of reality shows are not reality. The reality is we’re overfishing sharks, and this macho big-game attitude should be a relic of the past."

Keith Poe, a sport fisherman who tags and releases sharks for conservationists, said that most anglers are releasing sharks these days, but might keep a potential record-breaker .

"I wouldn’t keep it, but the general sportfishing community would say it’s acceptable," Poe said.

Potter, whose nickname is "Mako Matt," doesn’t buy any of the criticism, adding that he unloaded the shark at a public dock — not the marina. "It’s just like any other fishing. The state limit for mako is two per person per day."

He said he had five passengers out for three days and kept only the big shark. And he said he did not break the marina’s rules because he used the public docks.

Jack Vitek, the world records coordinator for the International Game Fish Assn., said the catch was "enormous."

He said that just seeing a fish weighing more than 1,000 pounds, much less catching one, was rare. And the shortfin mako is a particularly difficult quarry because of its unusual speed.

"They’re a very elite game fish, and to have the all-tackle IGFA record is any kind of big game angler’s dream," he said.

The Florida-based group has tracked world-record catches since 1939 — though some of its big catches date to the 1860s. Vitek said that if Monday’s haul checks out, it would break the standing mako record set in July 2001, when a 1,221-pound shark was hauled in off the coast of Chatham, Mass.

The largest fish catch on record was a 2,664-pound great white shark reeled in off the coast of Australia in 1959.

Makos are common off the coast of Southern California, which is considered a nursery ground for the young sharks. They tend to stay in open ocean and don’t venture into the surf zone, scaring swimmers and surfers as great whites do.

Makos typically feed off small fish such as mackerel and sardines, and move on to larger fish as they get older, according to Nick Wegner, a fisheries research biologist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla.

They’re some of the fastest sharks in the ocean, Wegner said, which makes the catch all the more interesting. Unlike most fish, makos can warm up their core body temperatures, making their muscles move faster.

"They’re a fascinating animal," he said.

Wegner said some of his colleagues had reached out to the fishermen who caught the shark, hoping to collect samples to learn more about the fish. The shark was probably a female based on its size, he said; male makos typically max out at 500 to 600 pounds.

His colleagues are particularly interested in the shark’s DNA and stomach contents. Though the sharks typically feed off fish, a small seal pup was once found in a captured mako’s stomach, indicating they might have other food sources.

"It’s pretty rare to catch a fish this big," he said. "If we can see what’s in the stomach, that gives us an idea of what they’re eating."

At Cal State Long Beach, marine biology professor Chris Lowe also sees a rare opportunity, particularly if the shark was pregnant, as photos of it seemed to indicate. One of his graduate students, Kady Lyons, hopes to get tissue samples of the shark’s liver and those of its pups, if there are any, to measure levels of contaminants such as DDT, PCBs and the pesticide chlordane.

"We can get an idea of where they’re encountering these contaminants and how much they pass on to their young," he said.

The scientists described the mako population as stable and did not express scientific concerns about the catch.

"It’s always good to know that those big sharks are out there," Wegner said. "On a personal level, it makes me a little sad to take such a big animal out of the ocean."

Now the VA Is going after Vets!

OUTRAGEOUS: Veterans Receiving Letters Prohibiting The Purchase, Possession, Receipt, Or Transport Of A Firearm/Ammunition…

February 20, 2013

Written By Constitutional Attorney Michael Connelly, J.D.

How would you feel if you received a letter from the U.S. Government informing you that because of a physical or mental condition that the government says you have it is proposing to rule that you are incompetent to handle your own financial affairs? Suppose that letter also stated that the government is going to appoint a stranger to handle your affairs for you at your expense?
That would certainly be scary enough but it gets worse.
What if that letter also stated: “A determination of incompetency will prohibit you from purchasing, possessing, receiving, or transporting a firearm or ammunition. If you knowingly violate any of these prohibitions, you may be fined, imprisoned, or both pursuant to the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, Pub.L.No. 103-159, as implemented at 18, United States Code 924(a)(2).”?
That makes is sound like something right from a documentary on a tyrannical dictatorship somewhere in the world. Yet, as I write this I have a copy of such a letter right in front of me. It is being sent by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of America’s heroes. In my capacity as Executive Director of the United States Justice Foundation (USJF) I have been contacted by some of these veterans and the stories I am getting are appalling.
The letter provides no specifics on the reasons for the proposed finding of incompetency; just that is based on a determination by someone in the VA. In every state in the United States no one can be declared incompetent to administer their own affairs without due process of law and that usually requires a judicial hearing with evidence being offered to prove to a judge that the person is indeed incompetent. This is a requirement of the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that states that no person shall “… be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law…”.
Obviously, the Department of Veterans Affairs can’t be bothered by such impediments as the Constitution, particularly since they are clearly pushing to fulfill one of Obama’s main goals, the disarming of the American people. Janet Napolitano has already warned law enforcement that some of the most dangerous among us are America’s heroes, our veterans, and now according to this letter from the VA they can be prohibited from buying or even possessing a firearm because of a physical or mental disability.
Think about it, the men and women who have laid their lives on the line to defend us and our Constitution are now having their own Constitutional rights denied. There are no clear criteria for the VA to declare a veteran incompetent. It can be the loss of a limb in combat, a head injury, a diagnosis of PTSD, or even a soldier just telling someone at the VA that he or she is depressed over the loss of a buddy in combat. In none of these situations has the person been found to be a danger to themselves or others. If that was the case than all of the Americans who have suffered from PTSD following the loss of a loved one or from being in a car accident would also have to be disqualified from owning firearms. It would also mean that everyone who has ever been depressed for any reason should be disarmed. In fact, many of the veterans being deprived of their rights have no idea why it is happening.
The answer seems to be it is simply because they are veterans. At the USJF we intend to find the truth by filing a Freedom of Information Act request to the Department of Veterans Affairs to force them to disclose the criteria they are using to place veterans on the background check list that keeps them from exercising their Second Amendment rights. Then we will take whatever legal steps are necessary to protect our American warriors.
The reality is that Obama will not get all of the gun control measures he wants through Congress, and they wouldn’t be enough for him anyway. He wants a totally disarmed America so there will be no resistance to his plans to rob us of our nation. That means we have to ask who will be next. If you are receiving a Social Security check will you get one of these letters? Will the government declare that you are incompetent because of your age and therefore banned from firearm ownership. It certainly fits in with the philosophy and plans of the Obama administration. It is also certain that our military veterans don’t deserve this and neither do any other Americans.

THE GREAT AMERICAN CANAL PROJECT

THE GREAT AMERICAN CANAL PROJECT

Introduction:

The Problem: Every year floods destroy hundreds of homes and ravish thousands of low laying areas in the flood plains of our large rivers like the Mississippi and others. In years of heavy rain falls or severe weather we flood the Mid-West to the point of overflowing many of our largest waterway’s banks. In many years, areas like LA and Mississippi are devastated by hurricanes and high tidal flooding that causes millions to billions of dollars in damage. In the last 20 years we have seen our Mid-West and plains farmers loose thousands of acres of crops because of draughts, much of the cattle business and other livestock businesses suffer every year because of draught conditions. Communities are forced to impose tighter and tighter water restrictions to try and control what little precious water we have stored in our underground aquifers. Flood waters also help destroy our ocean environments by adding more silt and waste byproducts to the local oceans and impacting our reefs and decrease the salinity of our oceans.

The solution: To create a series of canals that feed off our largest rivers that overflows during times of flooding to divert this excess water to areas of the country that can use it to its highest potential. Thus creating an overflow valve for our major rivers that could help reduce the flooding in areas, the destruction of homes and property and businesses each year, reducing the payments insurance companies have to pay out for these events, and reduce the federal assistance programs that fund disasters like flooding. Creating canals that feed into large water reservoir holding basins can:

 clip_image001

1. create hundreds of thousands of local jobs, create infrastructures for public recreation areas and business that support those activities. 2. Create the much needed manufacturing jobs in this country that can be part of the supply line for the creation of the infrastructure of the canals & retention basins. 3. Create jobs in hundreds of areas that are not government jobs, but private sector jobs that pay decent wages through the life time of the project. 4. Help fund our depleting funding into social security by employing thousands of workers. 5. Bring back the blue collar worker to America who is the middle class.

Looking Glass: Imagine when the Interstate Highway system was first thought of! Americans were on the verge of the explosion of the automobile and how it would affect the viability of the railroad systems in use at that time. The thousands and thousands of miles of highways that weave in and out of our large & small towns today were created decades ago by those who envisioned a better way to connect towns with other towns and to move product quicker.

The Stalemate: In today’s world we are torn by various issues when we try to solve major problems like this water problem, fuel shortages, energy issues and many others. What we will need to do is work with various groups at local, state and federal levels to ensure that this project is the best for us as a nation and for the individuals who will be impacted by the project. It is important that every person involved either directly or indirectly be informed of all levels of this project, it must have complete public transparency at all times. The public must partake in all the events because it is the public who should benefit from the results of this project so they must have a major say so in its design and build out and maintenance. We foresee that there could be various groups of people who will be against the project in certain areas for various reasons, this is natural and we must work with them to allow them to insert positive feedback into the creation of the project. An example of this could be that a canal may run through some area of the country where we have some endangered species. We need to work with groups that protect those area and have them help assist in locating areas where the project could divert its building so those protected areas were less impacted. And in the same time these special interest groups also must recognize that this project is making a positive overall impact on other areas that are regularly destroyed.

Design Areas: The project would start with the identification of areas along our large waterways that are prone to flooding, and then proceed to determine areas where large collection basins could be built in the mid-west and western states where water is needed. Purchase of property in the path of the canals and holding facilities needed would then happen along the path of each canal system giving attention to fair market value of property and to adhere to areas where conservation of habitat issues arise. Creation of some type of flood gate or canal gates along the large rivers to divert water clip_image002

the actual design and terrain selection of each of the canals that feed into the retention basins would be next.

clip_image003

Pumping stations, bridges, retention areas, access roads, construction sites, maintenance areas, recreational areas and water monitoring & testing areas would also be part of this phase.

Costs: With any project that has such a large scope the overall costs will be shocking to anyone. When you look at what we Americans pay for disasters that are water related along the Mississippi River for example those numbers usually run into the BILLIONS every time, not to mention the long term effect it takes on homeowners, businesses, families, schools and insurance companies (estimates for part of this run about 1% of the National GDP over a one year period or $1.25B). What if we decided to make a conscious choice and divert some advanced funding from our government that would normally be used for these disaster events and kick start a canal system for America? We know that the American road system was an expensive choice but look where it has taken all of us today! We need water in the West, Midwest and plains states if we are to continue to feed America and enjoy what America has to offer us. Costs of the project can be offset by those who will benefit from the resources provided, not to mention the devastating havoc that each of the disasters cause and the costs of those. A not for profit organization like Homeland Security Policy Institute Group could be set up to manage the overall project so the government would not have a controlling interest, the public and private sectors could work as a common combined effort to advance the project miles at a time across America. When water reached the large storage areas some type of use charge like we have in parks today could be levied to help pay for the water. Farmers, cities, water companies, environmentalists, recreational uses, conservation groups, communities who need water could purchase this water for use in the community at a nominal fee. Everyone would benefit from this water, those in the path of flooding would not have to worry about these disasters, and those who need water would benefit by having the water that was once sent to the ocean.

By Whom: This project could have an enormous potential of employing thousands if not hundreds of thousands of people all across this nation. People from all walks of life would be needed to help make this happen. Engineers, water specialists, tidal flow experts, sediment experts, construction experts, steel companies, steel fabrication people, concrete specialists, concrete companies, trucking companies, trucking manufactures, heavy equipment manufactures and sales, computer specialists, dam specialists, pumping specialists, recreational experts, support staffing facilities and thousands of others.

Conclusion: This is a very brief overview of how we as a country can again solve large problems by working on a united effort to achieve the common goal. It should be in the interest of every American to make this project a reality, we understand that without water our lifestyle will be altered forever and this country could face many devastating issues. We as Americans want our fellow citizens to live in prosperity and be able to provide for their families, by creating this project these and thousands of other realities and dreams will come true for decades to come.

The Day after the Storm- Election 2012

The Day after the Storm- Election 2012

OPINION

Well, it is over the days and nights of campaign ads, signs along the roads, media people who thought they could predict the results and everyday folks like you and me who were just plain fed up with all of it!

Today Americans got what they voted for! They will now see more of what this POTUS has been doing for the last 3+ years in even a stronger effort to turn this once great country into some type of 3rd world country who has more government workers than the private sector, more CZars than electoral votes and more and more rules and regulations AGAINST companies who would like to build and market something here in the US but can’t because of the regulations.

What happens now is anyone’s guess; I suspect that this POTUS will now try to legalize the 12+ million so called “Undocumented” or what I call them Illegal Aliens to get them to vote for more of the left’s agenda. This should also help the left by placing more of those new voters on many of our social program entitlements like food stamps, section 8 housing etc. Next I see him working hard with the Clintons to remove the 2nd Amendment or doing something that will water it down so much that owning a firearm will make you look like some type of a nut job in the new public’s view.  He will continue to push for his Green Energy plans with all the alternatitive energy crap and ignore all the efforts of drilling here in America or making any type of a trans Canada-US pipe line.

American debt will probably raise another $3,000 per person to something like $7500 per head; the POTUS will stress higher education but will not back school vouchers because it goes against the teachers union that backed his election. There will be more and more delays in government agencies like FEMA in disasters because the POTUS will put into those critical positions his buddies who have zero experience.  You will hear more and more about “Green Jobs”, and more and more of those companies will get federal funding and fail to actually make a profit.

You are having a good day today if you are a Union member or Union Leader, a government worker or someone who is seeking a job with the government because there surely will be more government jobs in the next 4+ years, you are a school teacher, you are on some type of federal assistance program like welfare, food stamps etc. or you are a illegal alien or the child of one and live here in the US.

You’re having a bad day today IF you actually thought enough Americans realized the total scam this presidency has brought to the highest office in the land to vote this lefty out of office and to take his carpet bag full of Czars with him. You are having a bad day if you are a business owner who actually was thinking that you might be able to hire new employees and maybe expand or get a loan for your business. Or maybe you are a company that does business with the military, and maybe just maybe if you are a enlightened one still in college you were hoping to get a decent paying job when you got out of school! And for all those seniors who thought they were actually going to retire, well think again! Your taxes are now going to be higher so you cannot afford to retire.

Our POTUS will still continue to “Bow Down” to other world leaders, this will make America weaker than before in the eyes of the world. He will continue to lead us down some type of path that is open to other religious beliefs in areas like religions interaction in legal matters or within the households of Americans.  And yes there will still be those who think he was not born here because he will still fight to show any actual documents of his schooling, birth or anything else and spend $$$$$ in hiding it all. I suspect some of us will still doubt this POTUS real identity, and he will continue to not provide the transparency he promised 3 years ago by covering up more and more of his failures.

Now think back over the last 3+years…… your vote counted, it just was not enough to get your guy into the office! Not enough people actually thought that their vote would count so they FAILED to get out and vote so your guy LOST. Americans are lazy, too busy to vote in what is the most prized possession any person can have, the power of the vote.

What will happen in the next 4 years is just anyone’s guess, lets pray that Americans stand together and get past all the crap that is thrown at them, let them stand against more regulations that will be imposed on them and let them have the courage to make a difference in getting a person who they can all stand behind a candidate who thinks the constitution is what America needs to follow.
